When you think of American cities with the best restaurants, what comes to mind? New York? Chicago? Los Angeles? What if we told you Houston deserves a seat at the head of the table? That’s right, Houston is America’s new foodie capital.
And the secret is out. In a recent issue of Departures magazine, author John T. Edge swooned over the city’s scrumptious cuisine, saying “Spend a day motoring the beltways that engird this megalopolis and you will reach the same conclusion I have—Houston boasts the most dynamic and diverse food and drink scene in the nation.”
Simply put, the Houston dining scene serves up something to please everyone. From critically acclaimed restaurants with renowned chefs –like Reef and Underbelly – to casual, mom-and-pop staples –Niko Niko’s comes to mind – to specialty food trucks – may we suggest Bernie’s Burger Bus, Oh My Gogi!, and Chi’Lantro? – this fine city has it all.
With great choices at all ends of the price spectrum, Houston’s dining scene is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant in the nation. The beauty of our city’s restaurant landscape is derived from an eclectic mixture of culinary influences that all come together into something totally unique. On the same street, you could easily find a Tex-Mex restaurant, a high-end seafood establishment, a barbecue joint, a Vietnamese sandwich shop, a French bistro, and a food truck serving the most mouthwatering burger creations imaginable.
When the New York Times mentions Houston as “one of the country’s most exciting places to eat,” you can rest assured that the national attention our dining scene has received in recent years is well deserved.
There’s never been a better time to be a food lover in this extraordinary city. It’s quickly becoming the hottest destination for foodies looking for their next great bite. So, put on your stretchy pants and come taste what everyone’s talking about!
Houston is definitely one of the gourmet paradise cities. I really enjoy the dishes there anytime I visit it.
Hurray for Houston! I love food, and I totally agree that our fine city has so much good food to offer. Thanks for all these links — I’ll be checking them out!
Niko Niko’s, Star Pizza and all those Pappas everywhere. Point, set, match. Of course we’re the best food town! We got more food than anybody and we actually know what to do with it!
I’ve had that exact meal at Niko Niko’s and let me tell you, it’s the best gyro you could ever lay your hands on. One of my very favorite things about visiting Houston is all the delicious food. Sometimes we plan our entire trip around the restaurants there!
Great post! Niko Niko’s is the BEST! I go there every time I’m in Houston~
I never been to Niko Niko’s , and I am not a pizza fan but I do like greek food I think I will give a try.
Just wondering what Houstonians think about pizza??? Are you stuffed (a la Chicago deep dish) or thin (akin to New York style)?
I was in Houston on business a few months back and gained 10 pounds in 4 days. The food there is amazing. Dining at Reef was quite the experience and I promise, you will never taste better food. I hadn’t heard about Niko Niko’s but it’s definitely now on my list to try the next time I’m in town!
